HAYLEY BARKER

coffee hand 1.jpg

To Move Mountains, 2020

This work considers durational repetitive acts.

The video consists of ground coffee placed in the lines of the hand with the aim to rearrange the structure. The hand starts methodically before slowly becoming more aggressive and frustrated in its motions. The coffee itself links to an aspect of my mother's illness that became a pivotal point in understanding the extent to which she was unwell. The movements then can be inferred not only are expressive of the frustration I felt, perceiving that the coffee hadn't changed form, but also mirrors the period leading up to my mother's hospitalization. To will for change and to not see changes.
