Book of Days

Book of Days (Reprise)

Procedure 1 (video)

Book of Days:

This piece explores relationships with medical documents.

Originally titled 'Important medical documents used as scrap paper' the pages of the book -with medicine boxes as a cover- are pieces of paperwork that have marks and notations on them. These notations go from appointments to tally marks. The tally marks have always been compelling to me as an act my mother does somewhat obsessively, and can be found on almost any piece of scrap paper in our house. Inspired by Anthropdermic Bibliopegy and the connection between the physical body, the book as an archival object and considerations into the Self.

Book of Days (Reprise):

Considers the routine of taking medication in comparison to the diary.

Using old Aspirin and Paracetamol from my grandmother's house, this piece has the 'sheets' of pills stapled together (See: Procedure 1) with the boxes as the book cover. The pills themselves become indicators of time. The work also considers the interior and exterior and the transition between the two.

Procedure 1 (video):

The video was taken during the process of making Book of Days (reprise), the work shows gloved hands stapling two sheets of pills to make a single 'sheet of paper' to be used in the interior of the book work.

The gloved hand becomes significant in comparison to other works, particularly when considering how fragmenting a body can be used paradoxically to encourage embodiment. Hands have played an important role in many of the video pieces I have created, this piece instead, reduces the human quality given to a hand and deems it to become a medical object.
